This vocation of mine as an author and publisher is my third. After finishing degree programs at the University of Iowa and the University of North Carolina and following a stint in the Army, I spent my first twenty years in the health care industry as a financial analyst, working primarily with large hospitals. I confess that after a time, creating and analyzing spreadsheets lost its glamour (it's okay to laugh, that was meant as a joke.) Instead, I wanted to get out of my windowless office and engage with people as sisters and brothers, not as numerical files.
And so I began my second vocation as an ordained minister. After graduating from seminary, I was privileged to serve three congregations, two in the Midwest. It was while serving in these two rural farm communities that I began to collect stories and engage with people, their history, their joys, their trials. Then an occasion arose when a difficult topic came up in our congregation. Rather than deal with the issue head-on, I crafted my sermon as a letter from an imaginary person, Herb Weiss, who lived in rural Iowa. Imagine that, I said, Herb's congregation is dealing with a similar issue as we are.
That premise enabled me to discuss such difficult faith issues as forgiveness, reconciliation, and acceptance of those who are different without being overly confrontational. As it turned out, these letters from Herb and Emma Weiss and Pastor Bob caught on. When are we going to hear from Herb people were known to inquire.
This question followed me into retirement. When are you going to publish your Herb and Emma sermons? The HAWKS NEST CHRONICLES is the answer to those requests, and my transition from retiree to author and publisher.
I invite you to read my first foray into the world of publishing, and please know you're invited to read my infrequent blogs which are available at the BLOG link.
